Tennis Completes Triple Crown with State Championship
The Barstow girls tennis team completed a dominant season on Saturday, Oct. 24, with a 5-0 defeat over Ladue St. Louis to win the Missouri Class 2 State Championship.
The girls came out firing in doubles with a sweep, winning three of the five points needed for a state title. At # 1 doubles, sophomore Phoebe Martin and freshman Atra Biria used solid volleys, overheads, and a consistent baseline game to win 8-0.
At #2 doubles, juniors Sarena Biria and Mary Colombo showcased big serves and smothered the net to roll to an 8-0 victory. On the last court, sophomore Lia Adams and junior Aishi Sethi battled it out. While Aishi produced deep lobs, Lia swept volleys and finished overheads for an 8-6 win.
The sweep of doubles left only two points needed in the remaining six singles matches. The first to lock in the fourth point was Phoebe Martin. Martin dominated both sets, 6-1, 6-0 with a solid baseline game. The fifth game that completed the championship run was locked in by Atra Biria. Atra's strong ground strokes never let her opponent come up for air as she closed out 6-0, 6-0 to bring Barstow home the title.
Saturday's play completed a championship run for the Knights: Sarena Biria is the state individual champ, and Martin and Atra Biria are the state doubles champs. The entire team contributed to a season that ended with Knights at number one.
