Barstow Students Win KU Engineering Design Competition

Barstow upper school students had great success at the KU Engineering Design competition on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Students in the Engineering Design & Robotics class  spent weeks working in small teams designing, building and testing projects in nearly every major engineering discipline for this competition.
The competition was a rigorous, day-long event on the KU campus in Lawrence. Students competed against 360 peers from 44 schools across Missouri and Kansas, making presentations of their engineering designs in front of a judging panel.

A huge congratulations to the following Barstow students, who won first place and received a $2,000 scholarship to KU:
  • Margo Gonzales & Amelia Beagle:  first place, Chemical Engineering Competition for Multi-Level Water Purifying System for Kansas River Water.
  • Daniel John, Will Keidel & Pierce Farinelli: first place, Civil Engineering Competition for Sustainable Building. The group maxed out  weights at 300+pounds without a crack!
The following Barstow students also received awards at the KU competition:
  • Anders Hwang & Turner Andrews: third place,  Aerospace Engineering Competition for Aircraft Design and Flight. Hwang and Andrews competed against 38 teams for accuracy and distance.
  • Stewart Kennedy Gregg & Harly Chang: third place, Mechanical Engineering Competition, Catapult Design and Launch Accuracy.
Barstow was the only school out of the 44 competing schools that won more than one event, winning two of the six competitions. Middle & upper school STEAM director Gavin Wood said, "In engineering, failure is always an option, but today Barstow students showed that success is an option, too."
