The Barstow girls tennis team had a historic outing on Tuesday, Sept. 28 on the Plaza in the KC Invitational, 16 of the area's premier high schools in Kansas and Missouri. The Lady Knights walked away with the 2nd place team trophy, the highest finish in school history.
In A singles Sarena Biria defeated a Blue Valley opponent, 8-1. In the semifinal Sarena took on Aliya Rector from Lee's Summit West, 6-4, 6-4. And in the finals Sarena took on Kansas' strongest player, Jill Harkin from Manhattan, KS. After dropping the first set 4-5, Sarena jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on to the second set 6-4 and won the singles title with a 10-5 tiebreak win.
In A doubles, seeded #2 in the tournament, Phoebe Martin and Atra Biria won the first two rounds against Manhattan and then Blue Valley North, 8-0. In the semis, the girls scrapped to a hard-fought 6-1, 5-7 (10-5) victory that set them up to take on the two-time 6A Kansas state champ and #1 seed from Shawnee Mission East. Phoebe and Atra used well-placed serve, a strong baseline game and more active netplay to win, 6-4, 4-6 and then a clutch 11-9 tiebreak for the B doubles title.
In B singles Aishi Sethi lost her first match to Olathe Northwest, 1-8, but rallied in the consolation round for a 8-6 win over Lee's Summit West and a second 8-4 win over Blue Valley Northwest for 7th place in the tournament.
