IDEA Space Welcomes Donors & Guests to First Look
The Barstow School welcomed donors and special guests to the Dan & Cassidy IDEA Space KC on June 21. They toured the state-of-the-art STEAM learning center and tried some of the tools, equipment and activities that students will experience starting with summer courses July 11.
Guests were welcomed by Vice President of Advancement Jennifer Dreiling and President Shane Foster, whose vision turned a vacant grocery story into a one-of-a-kind learning center that will equip thousands of students around Kansas City with essential STEAM and workforce skills.
Leadership Donors Cassidy Rudman Towriss '12 and Dan Towriss described their enthusiasm for educating tomorrow's innovators and leaders through IDEA Space programs.
"We believe that capturing and inspiring the imagination of young people has the potential to create game-changing, life-changing and perhaps even world-changing outcomes," Dan Towriss said. Cassidy Towriss added, "I look forward to the lessons children will get to take with them into their futures."
Director of IDEA Space Kellye Crockett welcomed guests to try their hand at making music with circuits and Play-Doh in the Makerspace, programming a computer game in the Technology Lab, watching the 3D printers in action and seeing how students will use the wood lathe to develop STEAM skills in the Fabrication Workshop.
The STEAM learning center will begin offering summer courses in July and Barstow students will begin experiencing IDEA Space as part of the school curriculum when the new school year begins in August.
